State Supreme Court sides with auditors over landfill agency
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Supreme Court has overturned a verdict that awarded $5.7 million to the agency that runs the Central Landfill in Johnston, siding instead with its former auditors in the case.
The Providence Journal reports that the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation had claimed in a 2015 lawsuit that audits by Restivo Monacelli LLP missed issues, including improper charitable contributions and major trust fund losses.
The Supreme Court found that the agency should have provided expert testimony to show how any accounting malpractice caused it to lose money.
Lauren Jones, an attorney for Restivo, said they were pleased with the outcome. Restivo, in disputing the claims, has said the damages were primarily caused by the agency itself.
The agency didn’t immediately comment.
