Witasick Signs Deal With Padres
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Right-hander Jay Witasick and the San Diego Padres avoided arbitration when they agreed to an $800,000, one-year contract on Monday.
Witasick can earn an additional $200,000 in performance bonuses based on the number of starts he makes in 2001.
Witasick was 3-2 with a 5.64 ERA in 11 starts with San Diego last year after being acquired on July 31 from the Kansas City Royals for right-hander Brian Meadows. He was 3-8 with a 5.94 ERA in 22 games, including 14 starts, with the Royals before being traded.
Witasick, 28, is 17-26 with a 5.76 ERA in parts of four big league seasons.
