Eastern Massachusetts man kayaks in 817-pound pumpkin

September 15, 2015

RAYNHAM, Mass. (AP) — An eastern Massachusetts man says he kayaked for miles in an 817-pound pumpkin in hopes of pushing children to want to dig in the dirt.

Todd Sandstrum hopped into the carved-out pumpkin with a paddle in Raynham on Saturday and kayaked down the Taunton River.

Sandstrum says he had hoped to kayak seven miles to the Weir Village Riverfront Park in Taunton.

But after an hour-and-a-half he had only moved about the length of a football field due to low water levels. The 32-year-old Easton man made it nearly 4 miles battling the water, logs and rocks before opting to finish the trek in a boat with the pumpkin in tow.

Sandstrum runs the South Shore Great Pumpkin Challenge, in which schools plant and care for giant pumpkins.
