Defending Champs Lead U.S. Track Team

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Hurdler Allen Johnson was among five defending world champions selected Tuesday for the U.S. team at the IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships next month in Paris.

Joining 110-meter hurdler Johnson on the team announced by USA Track & Field were shot put champion John Godina, women’s pole vaulter Stacy Dragila, 100-meter champ Maurice Greene, and 2001 world indoor and outdoor gold medalist Anjanette Kirkland in the 100-meter hurdles.

The world championships will be Aug. 23-31.

Others on the team are world record holder Tim Montgomery in the men’s 100 meters, three-time world champion Gail Devers in the 100-meter hurdles, and Olympic silver medalist Adam Nelson in the men’s shot put.

Seventeen-year-old Allyson Felix, who competes in the women’s 200 meters, is the youngest member of the team. Marathoner Linda Somers Smith is the oldest at 42.
