United Way to raise funds with giant board game

May 11, 2019

HUNTINGTON — United Way of the River Cities is bringing a long-time favorite board game to life with River Cities-Opoly. The fundraiser will take place Saturday, June 15, in the atrium at the Huntington Mall.

The localized version of the game will be played on a 20-foot by 20-foot board that features local business sponsors and creative chance and community chest cards.

“We wanted to do something new and exciting, so we’re bringing the popular board game to life and giving it a local spin,” said Resource Development Director Bill Rosenberger. “It’s a great opportunity to engage with the community in way that’s not only fun, but in a way that also highlights the programs and services being funded through United Way.”

Becoming a sponsor or registering a team is a way to help United Way of the River Cities continue providing funds to community partners, Rosenberger said.

There are more than two dozen sponsorship opportunities for River Cities-Opoly, starting at just $200. The deadline to sponsor is Friday, May 31.

Those interested in registering a team should call Rosenberger for additional details. The cost is $200 per team.

“What’s really exciting is how personal this game will be,” Rosenberger said. “Teams are bringing their own game pieces, whether it’s something that represents their company or something as silly as a large stuffed animal.”

He also said the chance and community chest cards, both of which are already sponsored by local organizations, will be unique as well. In addition to some surprising challenges, cards are being written to include sponsors, funded partners and United Way programs.

“One card might say, ‘Get a flat tire fixed at (auto repair sponsor). Pay $50,’” Rosenberger said. “Another might be tied to our education initiative, and another to agencies serving on the frontlines of homelessness.”

In addition to the featured event on June 15, United Way of the River Cities will take the game on the road to schools and community events in each of the five counties it serves (Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln and Mason counties in West Virginia and Lawrence, OH) in the fall and spring. One sponsorship includes all River Cities-Opoly events held through April 2020.
