Cheers for GHS
The 2018 Greenwich High School Cardinal football team, under the tutelage of Coach John Marinelli and his staff, has made us all proud! Since summer, the team has trained hard, formed strong bonds on and off the field, competed against the best in the state, and come out on top every time. They earned their No. 1 ranking and deserve the accolades that are showering down on them. Way to go Cards!
Truly, Greenwich’s No. 1 football team is a feather in the cap of GHS Athletics. Even more impressive is that more than 50 percent of GHS students participate in interscholastic sports, and GHS athletic teams top the state regularly, albeit with less fanfare. Already this year, Girls Swimming and Diving splashed its way to No. 1 in the LL meet and State Open, with Coach Lorrie Hokayem at the helm. In 2017-18, seven teams achieved state honors in their divisions and/or in the State Open. These teams were: Girls Swimming and Diving; Girls Volleyball, coached by Steve Lapham; Boys Swimming and Diving, under Terry Lowe; Girls Indoor Track, led by Evan Dubin; Gymnastics, coached by Sue Knight; Boys Golf, coached by Jeff Santilli; and Rugby, led by Joe Kelly.
And let’s not forget the Cheer Squad led by Coach Erin Montague. Yes, the girls keep the crowd pumped up at football and basketball games, but they also train for their own competitive season and have state titles to show for it. Throughout the year, Greenwich High’s athletes give the town something to cheer about.
