MADRID, Spain (AP) _ Carlos Moya saved a match point in the second set and beat Fernando Gonzalez 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) Tuesday to advance to the third round of the Madrid Masters.

The eighth-seeded Moya, trailing 6-5 and 40-30 in the second set, used two strong serves, including an ace, to hold serve and set up a tiebreak and the comeback.

Seventh-seeded Sebastien Grosjean advanced to the third round when Xavier Malisse retired because of a wrist injury. Grosjean led 5-1 in the first set when Malisse retired.

Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan beat former world No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten 6-4, 6-4 in a first-round match. Paradorn advanced to face fourth-seeded Tim Henman.

In other matches, qualifier Jan-Michael Gambill defeated Andrei Pavel 7-6 (3), 6-3 to set up a second-round match with Andre Agassi on Wednesday.

Feliciano Lopez beat France's Arnaud Clement 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4; and Nicolas Lapentti beat Michel Kratochvil 7-6 (5) 6-1.
