Donald Eugene Johns Sr.

Sept. 23, 1925 -- Aug. 9, 2018

Donald Eugene Johns Sr. passed away Aug. 9, 2018, in Omaha from complications of Lewy body dementia. He was 92 years old.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at Murdock Funeral Home in Perry, Iowa. Memorials to the family will be donated to Lewy Body Research at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minnesota.

Donald was born in Perry, Iowa, on Sept. 23, 1925. He spent his childhood in Perry, joining the Navy prior to his high school graduation at age 17. He married his childhood sweetheart, Joanne Marie Ellett on Oct. 26, 1946. Donald was honorably discharged from the Navy in June 1947, and graduated from Iowa State University in June 1952 with a degree in poultry husbandry.

Through the years, Donald worked for several feed companies as an over-the-road salesman. When Oscar Mayer came to Perry, he became a USDA meat inspector, taking a transfer to Schuyler in 1973. In 1991, Donald and Joanne moved to Waterloo, Iowa where he officially retired from the Federal Government on April 1, 1993. Following Donald’s retirement, he and Joanne spent several idyllic summers living and working at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Due to Joanne’s health, they returned to the Midwest, living again in Schuyler, and finally returning to Perry in the fall of 2012. Up until March of this year, he faithfully joined his Masonic brothers for morning coffee. Afterwards, he was off to the Rec Center to ride the stationary bike for an hour.

Donald is survived by daughter Dawne Bosier (husband Jim and daughters, Barbara and Julie) of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and son Donald Johns II (wife, Renee and son Phillip and his fiancée Kelsey Heffner)) of Omaha, six of his seven sisters, and numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his soulmate of 66 years, Joanne, on May 9, 2013; and various other family members.
