Shotgun Stolen From Beneath Pillow, Cousin Shot

March 9, 1988

PERRIS, Calif. (AP) _ A 70-year-old kept a shotgun under his pillow because of repeated break- ins, but the latest burglar got the weapon without waking the man and shot the sleeper’s cousin with it, authorities said.

Wally Newton woke up when he heard the blast and Simpson Brown yelling after being shot in the leg early Monday.

Brown, 70, and Newton share a home in Mead Valley, an unincorporated area about 65 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Brown told deputies he was sleeping when he saw a shadow pass his bedroom.

He called out, thinking it was Newton, but got no answer, said Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. John Horton. Brown got up, and found the burglar holding Newton’s shotgun, according to Horton.

″He (Brown) grabbed the barrel,″ Horton said. The gun went off. Brown yelled. Newton woke up.

Brown was hospitalized in good condition. The burglar escaped with the gun, Horton said.
