Conn. Has Interest in Grizzlies
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ State officials will be sending letters this week to the NBA and the Vancouver Grizzlies expressing interest in bringing the team to Hartford.
Jim Watson, a spokesman with the state Department of Economic and Community Development, made the announcement Tuesday.
NBA commissioner David Stern announced Monday that the league would support a move of the Grizzlies, a team that expects to lose $40 million this season.
Since then, cities including New Orleans, St. Louis, Las Vegas, Louisville and Nashville have expressed an interest in the team.
Connecticut has been without a major-league sports franchise since the Hartford Whalers of the NHL moved to North Carolina in 1997.
A deal to move the NFL’s New England Patriots to Hartford fell through in 1999.
