Cleveland man reports car theft, gets arrested on drug charge in Westlake

WESTLAKE, Ohio -- A 73-year-old Cleveland man called Westlake police to report a missing car and ended up getting arrested for drug paraphernalia, police say.

John Rausch called police about 3:20 p.m. Sept. 21 from the Super 8 Motel on Sperry Drive to report unauthorized use of his car, according to a police report.

Rausch told officers that he loaned his 2005 Dodge Caravan to a woman whom he has known for about five years, police say. She promised Rausch she would bring back his van, as well as his cell phone and credit card, but had failed to do so, police say.

While officers spoke with Rausch in his room, they noticed in plain view what appeared to be crack smoking pipes and other paraphernalia, along with white rocks suspected to be crack cocaine, police say.

Rausch was arrested and has been charged in Rocky River Municipal Court with a fourth-degree misdemeanor of drug paraphernalia, court records show. He was released and awaits arraignment on Tuesday.

The investigation is still active and the car is still entered as missing, Captain Gerald Vogel said.
