GIRLS SOCCER Wirth’s goal lifts Law over Foran

October 4, 2018

MILFORD — For 57 minutes Wednesday night at Law, nothing found its way into the net.

Then Jocelyn Wirth crashed the left post, and the ball wasn’t the only thing that crossed the goal line.

“I’ve never ended up in a goal before,” Wirth said after Law’s 1-0 win over Foran, ending a four-game winless streak that included three ties, two of them scoreless.

Though Law had controlled the first half, it was a little flat in the second, but the goal turned that on its head.

“We’re trying to make sure that, second halves, we come out as strong if not stronger than the first,” Foran coach Casey Blake said.

“I thought we did that. We played really well. We won balls. It’s unfortunate that we played as well as we did but come up on the losing end.”

Law goalie Jillian Hall had to make a couple of second-half saves on Foran freshman Courtney Musante to make sure of that.

She punched away Musante’s chance from about 20 yards out with just over a minute and a half remaining.

“(Musante) had some really good shots. We need more of those from the rest of the girls,” Blake said, “but I’m proud of their effort.”

The goal came with 23:07 left in the half, a couple of minutes after Law stemmed Foran’s run of possession in the midfield.

Wirth passed the ball left-to-right to Samara Thacker.

“She got a touch on goal, and it hit off one of the defenders,” Wirth said, “and I just followed it right in.”

It had been a while since Law led: Since a win over Sacred Heart Academy made the Lawmen 1-0-1, they’d drawn with North Branford without a goal, lost to Mercy, come from two goals down to tie Amity 3-3 and played another scoreless tie with Guilford.

“We’re playing a lot better teams than last season,” Wirth said. “It’s just kind of upsetting getting all those ties, because we want to win. We want to finish it.”

Law coach J.D. Rhode said he has been happy with the way the team has met its challenges in the first half of the season, even if at times they’ve been a little flat at the start.

“We’re also a pretty young team as well, so I think that’s probably a reason we play a little scared or timid in the beginning,” Rhode said.

Law and Foran will meet again on Monday at Foran High.
