Texas Woman Gets 45 Days in Custody Case
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A woman who kidnapped her son in California during a custody battle and kept him 4 1/2 years before surrendering him in June has been sentenced to 45 days in jail.
Sharon Murphy Johnson, 36, whose son Colin was the object of a nationwide search, also was placed on five years’ probation, ordered to pay $6,000 in restitution and perform 200 hours of volunteer work, said Sam McKee, assistant district attorney in Sonoma County, Calif.
McKee said Ms. Johnson, who lived in Austin under a different name, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a child and was sentenced in California on Monday.
Ms. Johnson took Colin in 1981 from her husband, Guy Johnson, who was given custody. She and Colin, moved to Austin, where she got a job as a counselor for the Austin Center for Battered Women.
