Maine to receive federal disaster relief funding

January 3, 2018

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — President Donald Trump has approved federal disaster relief for damage caused by an October windstorm that knocked out power for half of Maine’s population.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the White House says federal funding is available to the state, tribal governments and some nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis. The funding can be used for emergency work and to repair buildings damaged by the storm in 13 counties.

It is unclear how much federal assistance the state will receive.

Republican Gov. Paul LePage had requested federal disaster relief funding in November for $4.7 million worth of damage caused by the storm that lasted Oct. 29 to Nov. 1.

More than 400,000 people were left without power, some for more than a week.
