TEMPLE, Texas (AP) _ A former jail worker arrested twice this month for harassing his estranged wife shot the woman to death Monday, then died during a shootout with police on an interstate, authorities said.

It was unclear whether Juan Medellin, 31, killed himself or died from shots fired by police, authorities said.

Medellin shot his wife as she left their three children with his mother Monday morning in Dallas, police said. He then pushed her into her car and shot her again before driving south on Interstate 35.

``I heard the kids yelling, `You’re killing my mom!′ Then I heard him saying, `I love you,‴ neighbor Rosalee Ramos said.

Police stopped the car two hours later about 125 miles south of Dallas. They tried to negotiate with Medellin before gunfire erupted, police said.

Medellin left his job at the Dallas County jail about two weeks ago, sheriff’s department spokesman Don Peritz said.

Twice charged with harassment, Medellin was jailed but posted $1,000 bond each time, Peritz said.
