Miers: a Demographic Look
WASHINGTON (AP) _ As a 60-year-old woman who has never been married, Harriet Ellan Miers is part of a narrow demographic group, wealthier and better educated than married counterparts.
_ Miers is one of 796,000 American women age 55 to 64 who have never married, according to Census data. That is 5.4 percent of all women in that age group.
_ Of those woman, about 19,000 earned more than $100,000 last year.
_ About 12,000 had attained professional degrees, such as those earned by lawyers.
_ More than 30 percent of the women in that age group who never married earned at least a bachelor’s degree, compared with 26 percent of married women.
_ Miers is the only woman in that group to be nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court. If she is confirmed, she would join Justice David Souter, another lawyer in his sixties who makes more than $100,000 a year and has never been married.
_ Janet Reno, now 67, fit the demographic when she served as attorney general under former President Clinton.
