Man gets 15 years in prison after old sex assault kit tested

December 15, 2018

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A man who was linked to the rape of a woman in Portland 22 years ago using DNA evidence from a shelved sexual assault kit has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports 67-year-old Jihad Moore was sentenced Friday for the 1996 attack. He was found guilty at trial of two counts of rape and one count of sodomy.

Moore attacked a 24-year-old woman after luring her to Waterfront Park.

The woman reported the attack and was taken that night for a sexual assault forensic exam.

Her sexual assault kit sat in a police warehouse until 2016 when it was sent to a Utah lab. A match was reported between a male DNA profile and Moore’s DNA in a national database.

During trial, a defense lawyer argued the sex was consensual and questioned the chain of custody of the kit.
