Fla. Cruise Ship Passenger Dies

April 28, 2000

MIAMI (AP) _ A passenger plunged more than 100 feet from a cruise ship into the ocean Friday, and his body was recovered about an hour later, the Coast Guard said.

It was not known if the man jumped or fell from the ship Sovereign of the Seas. Authorities identified the man only as a 43-year-old resident of Port St. Lucie.

The Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ship was about 10 miles east of Miami shortly after daybreak when it reversed course and stopped to launch lifeboats, Petty Officer Sean Connett said.

The crew found the man and took him back to the ship, where he was pronounced dead, the Coast Guard said.

The ship, which can carry 2,252 passengers and a crew of 840, was returning from a four-night cruise in the Caribbean that stopped in the Bahamas and Key West.
