November 26, 1988

NEW YORK (AP) _ Hofstra scored 16 straight points in the opening minutes and went on to defeat Manhattan 74-53 Saturday, giving Butch van Breda Kolff a victory in his return as coach of the Flying Dutchmen.

The well-traveled van Breda Kolff, who has coached five professional teams and at four colleges, compiled a 136-43 record at Hofstra from 1955-62.

Erroll Flanigan led Hofstra with 15 points. Dave Althaver and Kelly Monroe each scored 14 points for Manhattan in the coaching debut of former Villanova assistant Steve Lappas.

The Jaspers played without Pete Runge and Greg Rock, who were serving one- game NCAA suspensions for playing in an unsanctioned summer league.

After Manhattan’s Charles Dubra opened the scoring, Hofstra responded with its 16-point run, taking a 16-2 lead with 13:32 left in the half. Hofstra led 34-16 at halftime as Manhattan committed 12 turnovers.

The Flying Dutchmen never were threatened in the second half.

It was the season opener for both teams.
