Late goal sinks Marshall men’s soccer
The Herald-Dispatch HUNTINGTON -- Jacob Moore’s goal off a deflection on the left side into the opposite corner of the net in the 82nd minute put Oakland University past Marshall University, 3-2, in a men’s soccer game Monday night at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. I think we just didnt keep our shape or our cool, Marshall head coach Chris Grassie said in a release. We knew exactly what they were going to come out and do, they did it. We did it until we scored and then we had a mental letdown. We got caught up in the calls too much and we got unorganized. They caught us on the counter-attack which is exactly what we talked about them doing.” After a 0-0 first half, the scoring picked up in the 54th minute with a pair of goals just 15 seconds apart. Marshall’s J.P. Rylah scored the opening goal on assists from Jamill Roberts and Jonas Westmeyer for a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute. The Grizzlies from Rochester, Michigan, answered 15 seconds later with a goal from Dawsun Schrum. Oakland (1-0-1) took a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute when Napoleon Outlaw III placed a ball across the net past Thundering Herd goalkeeper Paulo Pita. Gianni Bouzoukis scored the equalizer for Marshall (1-1-0) at 79:09. After a corner pick ricocheted in the box and a Westmeyer shot was deflected, the ball bounced to Bouzoukis who put a shot from just outside the 18-yard box into the back of the net. Marshall’s next match is 5 p.m. Friday against Ohio State University in a tournament at the University of Dayton. <ct:Bold>OAKLAND 0 3 -- 3 MARSHALL 0 2 -- 2 <ct:>M -- Rylah (Roberts, Westmeyer), 53:31.
