NEW YORK (AP) _ As if being hit by a cab wasn't enough, Maria Banaag lost her purse as well - to someone who snagged the bag moments after Banaag and another woman were knocked to the sidewalk.

''Only in New York,'' said Port Authority Police Officer Vinny Zapulla, who raced around a corner of the Port Authority bus terminal after hearing the crash Sunday morning.

''By the time I got there somebody had already taken the lady's bag,'' he said. ''What a lowlife.''

Banaag, 51, of Ridgefield Park, N.J., was hospitalized with a broken leg and head injuries, and Maribel Nunez, 22, of Hackensack, N.J., had two broken legs, police said.

The cab driver, Sam McBride, 56, was charged with assault and reckless endangerment, Port Authority police said.

The incident, said Port Authority spokeswoman Terry Benczik, ''makes New York look like a much colder place than it is.''
