NY Assembly to look at student loan debt

November 27, 2018

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — State lawmakers in New York are taking a look at what the state can do to lessen the burden of student loan debt.

The Assembly’s committees on banks and consumer affairs and protection are scheduled to hold a public hearing Tuesday in Albany to look at student borrowing and what the state could do to protect borrowers from increasing amounts of debt.

State figures show that overall student debt has increased 112 percent in the last decade. Nearly three million New Yorkers currently owe money on educational loans.

Any proposals offered by lawmakers following Tuesday’s hearing could be taken up by the state Assembly and Senate when the full Legislature convenes in January.
