Illinois woman killed in crash Saturday near Portage
TOWN OF CALEDONIA — An 84-year-old woman from Aurora, Illinois, died in a three-vehicle crash Saturday at the intersection of Highway 33 and Interstate 39 near Portage.
On Monday, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased passenger as Marlene A. Stangl. Five others were injured in the crash that involved two semi-trucks and a small sedan late Saturday morning in the town of Caledonia.
Stangl was a passenger in the sedan.
The crash is believed to have happened when the car, which exited from northbound Interstate 39 to Highway 33, made a left turn onto west Highway 33 and was struck by an eastbound semi truck. Both vehicles entered the westbound lane, where they were struck by a second semi.
The drivers of both trucks and each of their passengers were taken to Divine Savior Healthcare in Portage.
A Med Flight helicopter landed on a cleared portion of Highway 33, west of the crash site, and transported the driver of the car to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. Stangl was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
Deputies from the sheriff’s office and Portage Police Department responded to the scene. Traffic out of Portage on Highway 33 was diverted to County Highway U.
The Portage Fire Department also, responded, where help was needed extricating at least one victim from a vehicle.
