Three T-birds qualify for Div. III championships
BULLHEAD CITY — Wrestlers Steven Matthews placed second, and Trevor Salahub and Luis Martinez placed fourth at the Division III, Section IV Arizona Interscholastic Association Sectional at Winslow High School on Saturday.
The T-birds’ trio will represent Mohave High School at 9:30 a.m. today at the Division III AIA 2018-19 Division III State Wrestling Championships at Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott.
Matthews, who is a 195-pound senior, placed second at the section tourney.
“Steven overcame the Snowflake kid (Justin White) — excellent match,” Mohave head coach Kory Burgess said. “He made a couple of mistakes in his final
match and fell in the second, but he drew a pretty good bracket for state, and we think he’s going to go far.”
Walden Grove’s Ricardo Avelar stopped Matthews in the finals to earn the section title.
Matthews is 47-9 and will face Canyon del Oro’s 36-14 Andrik Valdez in the opening round.
Salahub is a 113-pound sophomore.
“Trevor had the most difficult bracket of all of them,” said Burgess about the competition Salahub faced at section. “He was one of five wrestlers with 40-plus wins in his bracket, so it was really tough competition.
“So, he did exceptionally well.
“Trevor’s only a sophomore, so we’re really excited and expect some great things out of him during the next couple of years.”
Salahub, who is 47-18 and finished fourth at the section tourney, will take on Poston Butte’s 45-12 Shane Landi-Ku in the first round.
Sophomore heavyweight Luis Martinez opened some eyes at the section tourney.
“The big surprise for us was our heavyweight (287), Luis Martinez,” Burgess said. “Luis has worked really hard this year and he performed exceptionally.
“It was the best he’s wrestled all year, and he’s going to do really well.”
Martinez, who placed fourth at the section tourney and is 26-24 this season, will take on Tempe’s 48-2 Orlando H. Molina in the first round.
