BENSON, N.C. (AP) — Police say a man who was shot while trying to rob a bank in North Carolina has been arrested in South Carolina after he had not been taken into custody when he was released from a hospital.

News outlets cite statements from Benson, North Carolina, police and WakeMed hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, as saying 46-year-old Ronnie Hiram Wessinger Jr. was apprehended Tuesday night in Greenville, South Carolina. Police say a customer shot him when he attempted to rob the bank with a pistol last week.

WakeMed says privacy laws do not allow hospitals to notify authorities about a patient’s discharge without a court order.

Investigators had tried interviewing Wessinger at the hospital but he refused to speak without a lawyer present. He awaits extradition to North Carolina.
