YORK, Pa. (AP) — Raine Miller, 7, was on the edge of her seat when the “earthquake” happened.

She could barely stay seated while operating the foot pedal for her sewing machine during a children’s sewing class at Gusa by Victoria recently in York.

Meanwhile, Meadow Manning, 10, had pressed down hard on her foot pedal, making her sewing machine whir furiously as the feed dogs pulled her fabric across the needle plate.

The sound and the fury made the girls, who had just met, laugh.

“It sounds like an earthquake,” they giggled.

The class is the first that Victoria Kageni-Woodard, who owns and operates Gusa by Victoria on West Philadelphia Street, has hosted this year. She hopes to have a basic sewing class once a month, and to add intermediate classes for those who already know how to use a sewing machine.

Kageni-Woodard began the recent Saturday class by showing Raine and Meadow, who each have dolls and stuffed animals they want to wardrobe, how to thread and operate the Singer machines. As they began to work on making drawstring bags to take home, Kageni-Woodard reviewed what they had already learned.

“We have this part of the sewing machine that’s called what? Feed dog,” Kageni-Woodard prodded Raine.

“Feed dog,” Raine repeated.

“Right, it feeds - ” Kageni-Woodard began.

″ - the dog!” Raine suggested.

Kageni-Woodard chuckled. “It feeds the fabric to the sewing machine; it walks the fabric through, so don’t push it,” she said. “Fold this; that way, it’s not in your way. Okay? All right, here we go!”
