Germans Score in Biathlon Relay

December 8, 2001

HOCHFILZEN, Austria (AP) _ A powerful German men’s biathlon team swept to victory Saturday, defeating Norway and Belarus in a World Cup 30-kilometer relay.

The German women’s team of Uschi Disl, Katrin Apel, Martina Zellner and Martina Glasgow won their 30-kilometer relay.

The German men, racing with Ricco Gross, Marco Morgenstern, Michael Greis and Frank Luck, crossed the line in 1 hour, 21 minutes, 18.7 seconds.

In second place, 8.2 seconds behind, was the favored Norwegian squad of Egil Gjellans, Ole Einar Bjoerndahlen, Frode Andresen and Halvard Hanevold.

Belarus, silver medalists at the last world championships and racing with Alexei Aidarov, Alexandre Syman, Oleg Ryzhenkov and Vadum Sashurin, finished in 1:22:16.0 for third.

Gross and Morgenstern put in fast laps for the Germans. But Greis, making his debut with the relay team, incurred a penalty lap for missing a target, all but eliminating the time advantage. Frank Luck then put in a fast last leg for the victory.

Men and women compete Sunday in pursuit races, the men at 12.5 kilometers and the women at 10 kilometers.
