17-Year-Old Mugger Ordered to Pay 102-Year-Old Victim

January 15, 1988

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ A circuit judge has ordered a 17-year-old mugger to pay $100 a month for the next five years to the 102-year-old man he attacked outside a grocery store.

″I don’t care how you get the money, even if you have to pick up beer cans or shovel sidewalks,″ Judge Frank Eppes told Darrell Burrell after he pleaded guilty to strong-armed robbery Thursday.

Eppes, who refused to listen to Burrell’s explanation why he committed the crime, sentenced him to 10 years in prison, suspended to five years probation.

The victim, David Johnson, said, ″He came at me as soon as I got out of my car″ last July 15.

″I fought him all the way,″ Johnson said, ″but he grabbed my pocketbook and took off.″

Burrell was arrested after a bystander who saw the attack chased him and scuffled with him. A police officer brought Burrell back to the grocery store, where a bruised and dazed Johnson identified him as the robber.

Johnson, who said he has never suffered an illness worse than a ″bad headache,″ recovered from his injuries.

It was the only time in his life he’s been a crime victim, he said.
