Firefighters called to house fire in downtown Aiken on Monday morning

November 20, 2018

Fire crews with the Aiken Department of Public Safety responded to a structure fire at a home on the 200 block of York Street on Monday morning.

Firefighters responded to 238 York St. after receiving a 911 call at 9:40 a.m. Monday, said Lt. Jake Mahoney, with Aiken Public Safety.

The home was occupied by one individual at the time of the incident, but he was able to safely escape without injury, Mahoney said.

The victim told investigators he was sleeping when the fire started, but woke up after hearing the sound of breaking glass from the intense heat, he said.

Mahoney said a second individual also resides at the residence, but that person was not home at the time of the fire.

Crews quickly arrived on the scene and managed to get control of the fire, but the home suffered “severe damage,” Mahoney said.

Investigators believe the fire started in the living room due to a “faulty electrical outlet,” but they are still investigating to determine the exact cause of the blaze.

The American Red Cross is assisting the two victims following the fire.
