Sweet Ways: Buñuelos are a favorite New Year snack

Arabella Garcia has been making buñuelos for seven years as an employee at El Globo Supermarket in Brownsville.

She was busy Monday meeting demand for sales of the sugary treats in Brownsville. For 20 years, El Globo Supermarket has been making buñuelos and continues the tradition with the store’s original recipe.

In the Rio Grande Valley, buñuelos are flattened dough, deep-fried and coated with brown sugar and cinnamon. However, recipes tend to differ around the world.

The sweet snack is a favorite New Year’s snack for South Texas residents.
