1 More Death Linked to St. Louis Shooting
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ A catering-service employee who killed three people in a daylong spree also fatally shot a woman whose body was found in the apartment of one of the gunman’s friends, police said.
The body of Carol Moore, 35, was found Wednesday, police said Thursday. The motive was unclear.
Herbert Chalmers Jr., 55, shot three other women to death Tuesday, including his 53-year-old estranged girlfriend, Sylvia Haynes, at her apartment.
He went to Finninger’s Catering Service, where he was a kitchen worker, and killed two of his bosses, Cleo Finninger, 79, and her daughter, Christine Politte, 44. He then took his own life in the parking lot.
Chalmers’ longtime girlfriend, Sandra Stamps, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Chalmers raped her before he went to Haynes’ home.
Stamps, 44, said Chalmers called her on the phone and she heard the shooting. She said she did not report what she heard Tuesday, fearing he would return to kill her.
Police said later they had investigated and believed her story.
``I didn’t want to report it, but it’s eating my conscience,″ she said. ``These people would have been alive. They didn’t deserve to die.″
Authorities and Chalmers’ co-workers have said he was angry about child support payments being taken from his paycheck.
A judge released documents Thursday showing Chalmers had been ordered to pay $362 a month for two children in 2003, including back child support.
