Ballard regains lead by 49 pins
SEBRING, Fla. (AP) _ Del Ballard Jr. reclaimed the lead after the first round of match play Thursday night in the Professional Bowlers Association Greater Sebring Open.
Ballard, winner of 12 career titles, pushed past Steve Jaros in the final game of the block. The North Richland Hills, Texas resident won six of eight matches and increased his pinfall total to 5,729.
Jaros, making his 12th match play appearance of the year, downed 5,680 pins for second as he looks to make the stepladder finals for the fourth time this year.
Darin Hays of Tampa, Fla., participating in his second tournament of the year, was third with 5,641 pins.
Norm Duke, from nearby Clermont, Fla., was fourth with 5,639, followed by Billy Myers Jr. of Temple City, Calif., with 5,636.
The 24 finalists return Friday for 16 more matches, after which the top five advance to Saturday’s finals.
