Georgia man receives life sentence for strangling woman

June 6, 2019

COVINGTON, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia man has received a life prison sentence for strangling a woman he had once been in a relationship with.

News outlets report 21-year-old Elijah Ramoutar of Covington pleaded guilty to murder and assault on Wednesday.

Police say Ramoutar strangled Alyssa Wright in December 2016 when they were both 19. The two had once dated and gone to prom together. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports a family member turned Ramoutar into police shortly after the slaying and said Ramoutar had confessed to the crime.

It remains unclear why Ramoutar killed Wright. According to the newspaper, the Wright family said there were no signs of issues between the two at the time of the murder. It’s unclear if they were still in a relationship at the time.
