District 2 Team Tennis Preview

May 7, 2019

District 2 Boys Tennis Team Championships

When: 9 a.m. today

Where: Kirby Park

At stake: The final four teams in Class 2A and 3A will all be competing in the semifinals and championship rounds, with the winning teams qualifying for the state tournament.

Class 2A seeds: 1. Wyoming Seminary; 2. Dallas; 3. Valley View; 4. Holy Cross

Class 3A seeds (includes District 4): 1. Abington Heights; 2. Williamsport; 3. Scranton; 4. Delaware Valley

Scouting Wyoming Seminary: The Blue Knights, the WVC regular season champions, defeated Dallas at the end of the regular season to clinch the top seed and defeated Dunmore in the team quarterfinals. Will Ziegler, a 2018 Citizens’ Voice All-Star selection, and Jerry Tang lead the team in Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Ziegler rolled in his quarterfinal match, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Seth Reyes. Both Ziegler and Tang were part of the Wyoming Seminary team that won the District 2 title in 2017.

Scouting Dallas: The Mounts are the defending District 2 champions and beat Scranton Prep in both last year’s championship and this year’s quarterfinals. Their only blemish during the season was the aforementioned loss to Wyoming Seminary. Dallas’ top three singles players — John Toussaint, Alex DeRome and Dom Rizzo — were all CV All-Star selections last year. Despite relative inexperience to start the season, the duos of Dan Flynn and Danny Dudick, and Robbie Lauer and Caleb Waslick have established themselves as dependable doubles pairings. If chalk wins out, the team would rematch with Sem in the final.
