Bond set at $1M for man accused of shooting woman
KANKAKEE — Bond was set at $1 million for Emanuel D. Burns, who is accused of shooting a woman on Kankakee’s east side on Sept. 12.
The 33-year-old Burns was released from Riverside Medical Center on Thursday and taken to Jerome Combs Detention Center, according to Investigations Commander of Kankakee Police Dave Skelly.
The Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office also charged Burns, of Pembroke Township, with aggravated battery with a firearm, home invasion, aggravated battery of a peace officer and attempted disarm of a peace officer, according to online court records.
Burns is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 28.
Police were called to a report of shots fired at Courtside Plaza at 5:13 a.m. Sept. 12. They found Burns armed with a gun when they arrived.
Burns surrendered the weapon when ordered by officers.
While being handcuffed, Burns began to resist. He was injured, as well as two officers in the ensuing struggle. The officers were treated and released.
The woman was shot in the face and back. Her injuries were nonlife-threatening.
The suspect and victim had a prior domestic relationship, according to Skelly.
There were two children in the home at the time of the shooting.
