Report: San Diego overcharged water customers $2 million
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A newspaper found that San Diego water officials overcharged customers more than $2 million last year.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Saturday that the city’s water department incorrectly charged thousands of residents, with some receiving bills for tens of thousands of dollars.
The city initially blamed leaky toilets, broken sprinklers and the rising cost of water in response to a flood of customer complaints.
The paper’s findings were based a recent internal audit of the Public Utilities Department that found customers received at least 2,750 incorrect water bills in 2017. The city said it has compensated the customers, but didn’t provide the paper with details.
