June 18, 2013

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A sergeant in the Arizona National Guard who served in Iraq has been sentenced to three years in a Massachusetts prison after pleading guilty to his role in a scheme to move $1 million worth of cocaine from Mexico to Canada.

Gerardo Flores of Tucson, Ariz., was sentenced Monday in Salem Superior Court on drug charges.

The 29-year-old Flores was one of three men arrested at a Peabody hotel in December 2011 by Massachusetts police acting on a tip from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The cases against the other two men are pending.

Authorities say they were moving nearly 25 pounds of cocaine.

The Salem News (http://bit.ly/10tpU2p ) reports that the judge took into account Flores’ military service at sentencing.

Flores’ lawyer called his client’s involvement in the scheme an “aberration.”
