WRESTLING: Havasu grapplers split duals with River schools
The Lake Havasu wrestling team had another run at the Colorado River schools on Saturday, splitting four duals at Mohave High School.
The Knights topped the host Thunderbirds and Parker in team competition and dropped duals with Kingman Lee Williams and River Valley.
The usual suspects helped carry the Knights as they continue to recover from a rash of illness and injuries. Jared Thomas, Earle Parra and Rob Samsoe each had big days on the mats along with sophomore Brandon Elizondo.
“(Elizondo) really stood out today, he fought off his back really hard,” Havasu coach Ryan Schuman said. “He really came through for the team.”
The Knights head to Buckeye mid-week for the final quad of the season, dualing with Youngker, Peoria and Arcadia, before postseason tournaments begin with the Colorado River regionals and sectionals. The state tournament will be held Feb. 8-9 in Prescott Valley.
“We have a few wrestlers coming back, a few still nursing some injuries. But we’re coming back, it’s getting better,” Schuman said.
