Rivers swelling with rain expected through Thursday

May 1, 2019

The National Weather Service of Northern Indiana is predicting more flooding as the St. Marys River swells and more rain predicted through Thursday night.

Meteorologist Patrick Murphy said Allen County and the area will probably get another inch of rain with some places seeing 2 to 3 inches.

Between Thursday and 4 p.m. Monday, rain had reached 2.63 inches at Fort Wayne International Airport, said Kyle Brown, meteorolgist at the National Weather Service.

“That’s just not going to be good for the rivers, streams, creeks and low-lying areas. The ground is so saturated and additional rainfall is largely going to go to runoff,” Murphy said. “There is a risk of more flooding as far as small streams, underpasses and roads through the week until we dry out Friday and through the weekend.”

Rain in Allen County began Sunday. As the St. Marys River flows north, there will be additional runoff into the St. Joseph River, “all combining to bring some flooding to the area,” Murphy said.

According to a news release from Mike Green, Allen County commissioners spokesman, four Allen County roads were closed due to high water Tuesday:

• Marion Center Road between U.S. 27 and Winchester Road

• South County Line Road between U.S. 27 and Winchester Road

• Bostic Road between South Anthony Boulevard Extension and U.S. 27

• Parrott Road between Hartzell Road & Maplecrest Road.
