NEW YORK (AP) — #OscarsSoInternational? It may not become a hashtag — but it’s certainly a theme, now that the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards have been announced. The academy gave Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” 10 nominations each, leading all movies for most nods. The focus on movies with international directors left some Hollywood favorites on the outside looking in. For example, Bradley Cooper’s take on “A Star Is Born” was expected to dominate. But Cooper was overlooked in the best director category, though the movie is one of eight up for best picture. The others are “Green Book,” ″Black Panther,” ″BlacKkKlansman,” ″Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Vice.” Winners will be announced on Feb. 24 in Los Angeles.

NEW YORK (AP) — Spike Lee has been making influential movies for parts of four decades. But now he has achieved something he hasn’t gotten before: a nomination for the Oscar for best director. He’s up this year for “BlacKkKlansman” — a sharp send-up of white nationalism and racism. Lee’s first Oscar nomination came in 1989 for writing the script for “Do the Right Thing.” His competition for best director includes Alfonso Cuaron, Yorgos Lanthimos, Pawel Pawlikowski, and Adam McKay. This year there were no female directors nominated, despite support for Debra Granik and/or Chloe Zhao to get a nomination. Only five women in Oscar history have been nominated for best director.

Among actresses, the nominees are Lady Gaga for “A Star Is Born,” Olivia Colman for “The Favourite,” Yalitza Aparicio for “Roma”, Glenn Close for “The Wife” — and Melissa McCarthy for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

NEW YORK (AP) — Netflix and Marvel both have something big to celebrate in the wake of this morning’s Oscar nominations. The Ryan Coogler movie “Black Panther” gives Marvel its first ever best-picture nomination. That’s considered a big deal since Academy Awards voters tend to shy away from superhero films and films that are smash box office hits — and Black Panther was both. It’s the first time a superhero movie has been nominated for best picture. Meanwhile, “Roma” has netted Netflix its first nod for best picture, a feat already achieved by Amazon. Netflix — long considered dominant as a streaming portal — tinkered with its own rules to boost Roma’s chances. It released the movie in some theaters before streaming it so it would qualify under academy rules to be considered for best picture.

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s always about the movies, of course. But the Oscars are also about music. And this year, Lady Gaga is in position to grab a double win when the Academy Awards are handed out Feb. 24. She is up for best actress and is also nominated for best original song for the movie “A Star Is Born.” In doing so, she follows in the footsteps of Mary J. Blige, who because the first person to compete for acting and songwriter honors the same year. Kendrick Lamar is also a nominee, gaining his first Oscar nod for his work on the song “All the Stars” from “Black Panther.” And Diane Warren hopes to shed the mantle of the oft-nominated, never-winning musician at the Oscars. She’s nominated for a tenth time for the song “I’ll Fight” from “RBG” — the film about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Warren jokes that she is “now in the double digits” when it comes to Oscar nominations — but says she isn’t jaded at all.

PARIS (AP) — Chris Brown is in some potentially serious legal trouble overseas. He and two other people are in custody after a woman filed a rape complaint. The Grammy-winning musician remains held while authorities look into potential charges of aggravated rape and drug charges. Investigators have two more days to decide whether to let Brown and the others go — or file preliminary charges against them. Brown’s reps at Sony Music wouldn’t comment on the complaint — or say why Brown is in Paris. And his U.S.-based attorney, Mark Geragos (GEHR’-uh-gus) didn’t respond immediately to requests for comment. Brown has been in several legal scrapes since pleading guilty to a 2009 felony assault of Rihanna, his girlfriend at the time. He finished his probation in that case in 2015, but has continued to have run-ins with police.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Kaye Ballard has died. Word of her death comes from a friend, who says she died last night at her home in Rancho Mirage, California. RED BANK, N.J. (AP) — Jon Bon Jovi’s wife says she hopes those affected by the federal shutdown will continue to use their restaurant as a resource. The JBJ Soul Kitchen in Red Bank, New Jersey served up 71 free meals to furloughed federal workers and their families yesterday — and will be back at it again tomorrow. The meals are a result of a partnership with Gov. Phil Murphy’s charitable foundation. The governor and his wife visited the workers. One of the recipients expressed gratitude. Kristy Benson, whose husband is in the Coast Guard, says the food was amazing.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country singer Maxine Brown Russell has died. She teamed up with her brother Jim Ed Brown and sister Bonnie Brown to form the country trio The Browns. A rep for the family says Russell died yesterday while being treated in hospice care in Arkansas. She was 87. A songwriter and singer, Russell and her siblings launched their careers with “Louisiana Hayride” in the 1950s and had several chart-topping songs in the ’50s and ’60s, including “The Three Bells,” ″The Old Lamplighter,” ″Scarlet Ribbons,” and “Send Me the Pillow You Dream On.” They were on TV shows like “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “American Bandstand.” The Browns were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.

UNDATED (AP) — Fox News host Bret Baier (BAY’-er) and his family have survived a motor vehicle crash in Montana. In a statement today, the host of “Special Report” says he and his family were skiing in Montana — and on their way to the airport, they were in “a major car crash” in Bozeman. Baier says a passing motorist stopped to help and the family was able to scramble out of the vehicle, which flipped over. He describes himself and his family as “banged up but alive.” And Fox says it expects Baier back on the air tonight.
