Ireland to host England for 1st time in 20 years
DUBLIN (AP) — England will play a friendly international against Ireland in Dublin in June 2015, marking the first meeting between the countries in the Irish capital since 1995 when the match was abandoned because of crowd disorder.
That contest in February 1995 lasted 28 minutes before players were taken off the field after a section of England fans rampaged inside Lansdowne Road stadium, tearing up wooden benches and throwing them at opposing fans before battling with Irish police.
More than 20 people required hospital treatment and over 40 were arrested.
Political relations between the two nations have improved since then and the teams played each other at Wembley Stadium in May last year.
English FA executive Adrian Bevington says “it will be a significant moment for England to play in Dublin again.”
