Israeli Garbage Strike Ends

September 9, 1999

JERUSALEM (AP) _ Municipal workers and government negotiators signed an agreement Thursday to end an eight-day strike that left thousands of tons of garbage piled up throughout Israel.

Trash collectors then wasted no time in beginning to sweep up the pungent piles, but officials said they were unlikely to finish the job by the start of the Jewish New Year at sundown Friday.

Union leaders resolved a dispute over wages by agreeing to a 4.8 percent raise, Israel Radio said. Negotiators also agreed that the 100,000 municipal workers would forfeit vacation days but not salaries to make up for days not worked during the strike.
