Police say man charged after gunfire exchange with officer
PEARL, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man has been arrested and a police officer has been put on leave after they exchanged gunfire.
The Pearl Police Department spokesman, Lt. Brian McGairty, says shots were fired Saturday night off Interstate 20 in Pearl. He says an officer was responding to a call about a person lying next to the interstate, and that person shot at the officer.
McGairty says 24-year-old Oscar Willie Leontez Curtis of Jackson is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
McGairty says Curtis was shot once, and the officer was not hit.
The officer’s name was not released.
It was not immediately clear whether Curtis has an attorney.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking the case, which is standard procedure for shootings that involve law enforcement officers.
