SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two men have life-threatening injuries after being shot on a busy sidewalk in San Francisco by a gunman who fled the scene, police said Friday.

Officers responded about a minute after the Friday afternoon shooting and found the victims bleeding on the ground in the gritty Mid-Market district, Officer Joseph Tomlinson said.

A witness told The Associated Press he and his wife were in an Uber that stopped at an intersection when they heard at least two gunshots and saw the men fall to the ground.

“It was surreal, like a movie,” Christopher Davies said. “We were in shock.”

The victims appeared homeless because they were among a group of people sitting on the sidewalk with their belongings. Davies said dozens of bystanders quickly helped them.

Amid the chaos, he said he didn’t see the gunman.

“What was astounding was that a police car was parked across the street and a fire truck had just passed by,” Davies said.

Police said the men were taken to the hospital.

Tomlinson said investigators were interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video to identify the suspect. They blocked access to the crime scene for more than hour to investigate, causing a traffic backup in the downtown area.
