Cyclist Axelsson Reportedly Banned
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) _ Swedish cyclist Nicklas Axelsson was reportedly banned from competition for four years Monday after he tested positive for traces of the banned endurance-boosting drug EPO.
The Swedish news agency TT said that Axelsson was tested after the road race in the World Cycling Championships in October in Portugal, where he finished 18th while riding for Alessio of Italy.
He admitted using the banned drug in a newspaper interview the following month and the tests confirmed traces of EPO, or erythropoetin.
A panel of the Swedish Cycling Association gave Axelsson the maximum penalty of four years, according to TT. The association could not immediately be reached to confirm the decision.
Axelsson’s top career showing was sixth place in the 1999 Giro d’Italia.
