Storm Kills At Least 20, 48 Missing in Philippines
MANILA, Philippines (AP) _ A tropical storm poured heavy rain on the central Philippines today, causing mudslides and flash floods that killed at least 20 people. Forty-eight people were missing.
Mud and boulders blocked roads, and at least three bridges were washed away, officials said.
Danilo Azana, vice governor of Albay province near the southern tip of Luzon, said 15 people died in 10 landslides in the town of Manito, 220 miles southeast of Manila.
The Office of Civil Defense said three other people were known dead in Albay but 48 were missing. Two people died in neighboring Sorsogon province.
Civil defense officials said 16,066 people were evacuated to shelters in the two provinces.
