Netflix comedy specials with Romano and Hart among top viewing choices

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Netflix comedy specials starring Kevin Hart and Ray Romano are among the week’s top viewing choices:

“American Soul” (9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, BET): Sinqua Walls (“Power,” “The Breaks” stars in this series dramatizing the life of “Soul Train” creator and host Don Cornelius. Set in the 1970s, it mixes music and behind-the-scenes intrigue, recalling the landmark syndicated show’s songs, dances and fashions. Blending fictional plot lines with real-life characters and moments, “American Soul” also stars Grammy-nominated singer Kelly Price, Jason Dirden (“Greenleaf”) and Iantha Richardson (“This Is Us”). Guest stars include Kelly Rowland as Gladys Knight, Michelle Williams as Diana Ross, Bobby Brown as Rufus Thomas, Gabrielle Dennis as Tina Turner and McKinley Freeman as Ike Turner.

“Ray Romano: Right Here, Around the Corner” (Tuesday, Feb. 5, Netflix): The Emmy-winning “Everybody Loves Raymond” star’s last stand-up special was 23 years ago. The comedian, screenwriter and actor has crafted this streaming special from two sets performed on the same night: one at Manhattan’s Comedy Cellar and the other at the Village Underground. The venues are around the corner from each other, hence the title. Topics include choosing friends, surviving marriage, and knowing the difference between being old and not being young.

“High Flying Bird” (Friday, Feb. 8, Netflix): Directed by Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic”) and written by Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney (“Moonlight, this film stars Andre Holland as Ray Burke, a sports agent with an NBC rookie client (Melvin Gregg). With a labor dispute halting play and his career on the line, Ray is caught in the face-off between the league and the players. He has only 72 hours to pull off a daring plan. The cast includes Zazie Beetz, Zachary Quinto, Sonja Sohn, Bill Duke, and Kyle MacLachlan, with appearances by NBA athletes Reggie Jackson, Karl-Anthony Towns and Donovan Mitchell.

“Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History” (Friday, Feb. 8, Netflix): The comedian, who made several rounds of headlines after stepping down as host of the Academy Awards, steps up to the streaming plate with this comedy special highlighting the contributions of black history’s unsung heroes. Hart’s “Guide” gets a TV-PG rating and assists from Saniyya Sidneyand Lil Rel Howery.

“White Dragon” (Friday, Feb. 8, Amazon Prime): This eight-episode British thriller stars John Simm (“Life on Mars)” as sheltered London professor John Mulray, who is investigating his wife’s sudden and mysterious death in Hong Kong. Following the evidence, he is drawn into a web of conspiracy. Filmed in London and Hong Kong, the drama features Anthony Wong (“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”), Emilia Fox (“Merlin”), Katie Leung (“Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”), Tim McInnerny (“Game of Thrones”), Anthony Hayes (“Mystery Road”) and Dervla Kirwan (“Doctor Who”).
