Tauziat, Pierce Gain in Luxembourg
LUXEMBOURG (AP) _ No. 2 seed Mary Pierce survived an early scare against French compatriot Sarah Pitkowski Wednesday to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the Seat Luxembourg Open and remain on course for a second tournament win in as many weeks.
Top-seeded Nathalie Tauziat had no advancing into quarterfinals of the $164,250 WTA tournament, sweeping past Austrian qualifier Sylvia Plischke 6-2, 6-4.
The only seed to fall Wednesday was No. 7 Iva Majoli of Croatia who was no match for qualifier Evgenia Koulikovskaya of Russia 6-2, 6-4.
In other second-round action, Germany’s Anke Huber, seeded sixth here, won beat France’s Amelie Mauresmo 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 and will now meet Tauziat in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Fifth-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan was involved in a similar marathon match against Barbara Schett, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Sugiyama will play Pierce next.
Elena Likhovtseva of Russia had no trouble beating Elena Tatarkova of Ukraine 6-2, 6-1. Tarakova had beaten defending champion Amanda Coetzer of South Africa in the first round.
Irina Spirlea of Romania, seeded third, also advanced into the quarterfinals in straight sets, beating Belgium’s Sabine Appelmans 6-3, 7-5.
