CanadianDiplomats Evacuated From Lebanon
BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) _ The last remaining Canadian diplomats in Lebanon left the country and flew to the Syrian capital of Damascus because of the escalation of rival militia fighting, diplomatic sources said today.
The sources, who asked not to be identified, said the three Canadian diplomats, including Ambassador Jacques Noiseux and several other Canadian technical staff, left Lebanon in bullet-proof cars for neighboring Syria Thursday.
The diplomats said the evacuation followed the visit to Lebanon by the Canadian government’s head of security, who ordered their departure.
About 30 Lebanese employees work for the embassy, which partially moved to the Christian port of Jounieh north of Beirut, the Lebanese capital.
It was unclear if the move was a temporary or whether the embassy has been closed down completely. Most Western embassies have trimmed down their diplomatic staff in Lebanon amidst escalating street fighting between rival armed factions since last March.
