US Sen. Markey files bill to curb drone data collection
BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Edward Markey is calling for tighter restrictions on the use of drones
The Massachusetts Democrat teamed with U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, a Vermont Democrat, on a bill to create safeguards to protect the privacy of individuals from the expanded use of drones.
The bill would prohibit issuing drone licenses unless the applicant explains who will operate the drone, where it will be flown, what kind of data will be collected and how the data would be used. The applicant would also have to disclose if the information would be sold to third parties, and how long it would be kept.
The bill would also mandate that law enforcement surveillance involving drones would require search warrants. The Federal Aviation Administration would have to create a public website listing approved licenses.
